I don’t live in the Blue Mountains. Is there a shed in my area?
There are sheds all around Australia, and several in New Zealand and the UK. New sheds are being opened all the time. You can obtain a list of most of the Australian sheds by visiting the Australian Men’s Shed Association web site
Where are we located?
We are located in the old Trotting Pavilion in Katoomba Showground at:
6 Orient St, Katoomba (west across the Showground from Katoomba Hospital).
Or you can phone us on 4782-SHED (4782-7433) and leave a message.
Who runs the shed?
The shed is run by the mens who use it. A Management Committee meets once a month and is open and all members are invited to attend. Committee membership is voluntary and election of officers is held at the AGM.
We are affiliated with no other outside organisation and receive only occasional limited funding from government bodies.
KMS is registered with the Australian Men’s Shed Association.
How often will the Shed open?
A four days a week to start with but eventually up to five. Remember that everybody at the shed is working there voluntarily and it will depend on who is available and when.
How can I help?
You can help in any way you can. Here are some suggestions:
· Come along and meet new people. Have a cuppa and a yarn
· Share a skill. Maybe you are a woodworker, a plumber, a welder, a poet, a painter, know how to build a musical instrument, can make great coffee…
· Teach someone else.
· Learn a new skill. Find someone who can teach you how to braze, french polish, become a mentor, fix a bike, fix a lawnmower, make great coffee…
· Join the management committee
· Be a supervisor – volunteer yourself for a day a week, or month, to open up, lock up, keep an eye on activities etc.
· Start a project – make toys, build a boat, a guitar, restore Granny’s old sideboard…
· Organise a workshop, lecture or social evening
· Donate materials or equipment
· Tell somebody you know about the shed
Can women attend?
Whilst it is primarily a meeting place for men, women are always welcome to participate in most shed activities. However there may be times when “men only” events are held. This is usual in Men’s Sheds.
Who can attend?
Any man, young or old, any background or level of ability willing to share their company, skills and wisdom with other men.
What activities are available at the shed?
Activites depand on the needs of the men attending the shed. These will evolve over time. Initially there will be woodworking, metalworking, computer and craft equipment and space available for individual or group projects. In time, we may run discussion groups, lectures, evening social activities, mentoring and so forth.
